The Epsom Oaks is the of the English Horse Racing Classics of the year for three year old fillies and it is a race that is eagerly anticipated along with the Derby, which is the more prestigious of the two and run on the Saturday of this two day Race meeting at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, England.

The betting for the 2009 Oaks started to take shape when Sariska’s victory in the Musidora Stakes at York on May 14th finally added some much needed zest to the Epsom Oaks antepost market.

The Michael Bell trained filly looked mightily impressive when winning the Group Three race, leaving at least three other Oaks fancies trailing in her wake. Those three included the Queen’s Enticement, who had gone off favourite for the race, but the Sir Michael Stoute trained filly looked well out of her depth in what looked like a strong group Three race, confirming that the form of Sariska could be well worth taking note of.

Bell of course trained the Epsom Derby winner in 2005 with Motivator and is confident that Sariska can now bring home the fillies equivalent at Epsom on June 5th. She has been shortened across the board now and currently heads the Oaks market with most Bookmakers. Rainbow View, the long time Oaks favourite is now the second favourite.

Sariska who won her only start as a two year could manage only fourth place in the Fred Darling Stakes in April, but in defeat she showed great promise, when staying on at the end of that 7 furlong dash. She confirmed then as she did in the Musidora that the Epsom trip of 1½ miles will be no trouble to her.

Meanwhile Rainbow View will not re-appear until Epsom leaving punters and plaudits alike guessing as to what her true form really is. Unbeaten as a two year old and the top rated filly in the country, Rainbow View’s hugely disappointing run in the 1000 Guineas left the racing world in some shock and the Oaks antepost market stagnant. She is reported to have come out of the Guineas in good shape and will have a couple of strong gallop work outs between now and the big race.

Henry Cecil who has trained eight winners of the Oaks is still confident that he can make it nine with his Lingfield Oaks trial winner, Midday. She, in similar fashion to Sariska bolted up in that trial and was pushed into joint favouritism with Rainbow View; the two now sit jointly at the top of the betting.

Another filly who entered the fray for serious Oaks contention was the John Oxx trained Beauty O Gwaun. She maintained her unbeaten record with a decisive win in the Group Three, Blue Wind Stakes at Naas on May 14th. Her trainer however at this stage is not sure whether she will go to Epsom or not believing that she may still be a little green and in need of further race experience. That said if she does come over for the race, then punters should remember that it is the official year of the Ox and that stable has already claimed the 2000 Guineas this year.
